A former US military base is becoming Data4's German debut: the French operator is redeveloping the Grossauheim barracks site in Hanau, near Frankfurt, into its first mega campus in the country, planned at 180 MW. The investment has grown from an initial 1 billion to more than 2 billion euros since Data4 purchased the roughly 25-acre site in 2023; preparation and demolition led into construction from 2024, the ceremonial groundbreaking took place in September 2025, and the full campus build-out is expected to run to 2032. Plans include an on-site electrical substation and a combined heat and power plant, with the campus to run on 100% renewable energy. Positioned an easy distance from the Frankfurt interconnection hub while avoiding its land constraints, the Hanau campus targets hyperscale cloud and AI customers needing large, contiguous European capacity, and Data4 expects it to create several hundred jobs in the region.
