Chindata Guanting Lake Big Data Industrial Base

An hour's drive northwest of Beijing, the Guanting Lake Big Data Industrial Base in Donghuayuan, Huailai County is the anchor of Chindata's Capital Rim strategy — and the campus the company calls the largest single data centre campus in China. Operational since 2017, it exploits Zhangjiakou's combination of cheap land, a cool climate at 40 degrees north latitude and abundant wind and solar generation; Chindata cites a 70% renewable energy ratio across its Huailai cluster. The site forms one corner of a 'three points in one city' deployment alongside the Sangyuan and Cunrui campuses, a build-out that helped Huailai County win designation as a national new-industrialisation demonstration base for data centres in 2020. Chindata's model is hyperscale-first: it plans, invests, builds and operates entire campuses for a small number of very large customers, and names Tencent, China Telecom, China Unicom and iSoftStone among partners in the Huailai cluster. The proposition targets Chinese internet platforms and cloud providers that want Beijing-adjacent capacity at renewable-heavy campus scale rather than space inside the capital's constrained urban market.
