River cooling defines this project: MRS5 will draw naturally cold 15 C water from a disused mining gallery through an underground network, a system Digital Realty says is around 30 times more energy-efficient than conventional chillers and that underpins a design PUE of 1.3. The facility is rising on the site of a demolished sugar silo inside the Grand Port Maritime de Marseille, extending the operator's subsea-cable gateway campus to a sixth building. The silo was deconstructed in 2024, construction runs from 2025 to 2027, and the data center is slated to be operational in 2028 with 22 MW of IT load; Digital Realty's own listing cites about 4,400 sqm of space, while planning coverage has described up to 12,000 sqm of IT area. Like its MRS siblings it will run on 100 percent renewable power and is targeting LEED certification, aimed at carriers and cloud and AI platforms exchanging traffic between Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia.
